What are the entry COVID-19 entry requirements for Italy?

With travel requirements regularly changing, we have compiled the entry requirements for travel to Italy.

Who can travel to Italy?

Italy is open to travellers from the EU as restrictions are gradually lifted, it should be noted that Italy is under a state of emergency until the end of 2021. Some countries outside the EU are also permitted to visit the country. Italy is also currently open to the following:

  • Tourists from countries declared as safe by the EU.
  • Family members and partners of Italian citizens.

Due to the Omicron variant, travel from the following countries is non-permitted:

  • South Africa
  • Lesotho
  • Botswana
  • Malawi
  • Zimbabwe
  • Mozambique
  • Namibia
  • Eswatini

Do I need to take a COVID-19 test before entering Italy?

All arrivals to Italy are required to present a negative PCR or Antigen result upon arrival that is no older than 48hrs, you then must test again at the end of your quarantine. Arrivals from Northern Ireland and the UK are required to present a negative PCR test taken 48hrs before arrival. All arrivals must also complete a travel declaration form before arrival.

Do I need to quarantine on arrival in Italy?

Yes, the majority of arrivals to Italy are required to self-quarantine for 10 days. There are some exemptions as Italy is working on a list system:

  • Arrivals from countries on list D will be required to quarantine for 5 days, unless presenting negative test results and proof of vaccination. You can find the full list of D countries here.
  • Arrivals from countries on list C are not required to quarantine, this includes; Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Portugal and Spain. You can find the full list here

Are bars and restaurants open in Italy?

Yes, bars and restaurants are open, subject to social distancing requirements. A green certificate is required to dine indoors. Non-essential businesses are also open but subject to restrictions in order to minimise the spread of COVID-19.

Will I have to wear a mask in Italy?

Wearing a face mask is a requirement in enclosed public spaces and on public transport. 

What do I need to do to return to the UK?

All travellers re-entering the UK, regardless of vaccination status, will need to take an Antigen test before returning to the UK as well as a Day 2 PCR test. Until you receive a negative PCR test result, you MUST self-isolate.
